Introduction

Insight Arts began in the spare rooms of the United Church of Rogers Park in 1991, headed by a group of Rogers Park community residents and youth. The organization began as a discussion forum and a space where members of the community could come to share and act upon their social concerns with the strength and support of their neighbors. In reaction to these discussions, Insight Arts members began to create works of art to explore the racial, cultural, generational, and socioeconomic elements of Rogers Park.

This process meant that Insight Arts staff, participants, volunteers and governors engage in the development of a collective analysis. This means that we often engage in group study and reflection around our work. We offer some of our collective analysis here. It is important to understand that the analysis grows directly out of our experiences engaging in the artistic process.

We have been greatly aided by many groups and individuals during our history. We want to particularly credit The Praxis Project, a former program of the American Friends Service Committee, for helping Insight Arts study and practice coyuntural analysis during our formative years. We would also like to credit POWER (People Organized to Win Employment Rights) a San Francisco based grassroots organizing and leadership development organization that focuses it work around building progressive movements in working class and poor communities.
